As we head into the sixth event on the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires schedule, there is a glaring absence of three drivers from the official driver line-up for Road America. As previously detailed, Pro Mazda graduate Garett Grist has replaced Scott Hargrove in the Team Pelfrey #3 Dallara IL-15. The two additional no-shows are RC Enerson and Felix Rosenqvist, two of the brightest young talents in the series.
Based on my intel, it appears that Enerson has put an end to his Indy Lights career to begin work on an IndyCar program for 2017. The Florida driver has been impressive in his 24 Indy Lights starts, winning at Mid-Ohio last year and posting three top-fives and five top-10s this year. Enerson and his management have been adamant in regards to their focus on developing RC’s talents to make the eventual move to IndyCar. But, taking the lead of guys like Josef Newgarden and Spencer Pigot who both raced just one year of Indy Lights, the issues that have pushed Enerson over 70 points out of the series points lead may have fueled a change in focus on the future instead of the present.
I predict that we’ll see Enerson testing an IndyCar before the season is finished, potentially with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, although I believe that several other teams would definitely be possible landing points for the young American. I’m told that a limited IndyCar schedule for 2017 is the primary target, although a full season and a run for Rookie of the Year is the end goal.
